Fun Freshwater Fishing Facts

  • Many fish can distinguish colors, though this is only useful in shallow water and in the daytime. Vision probably is black-and-white in deep water and at night, due to low light levels.
  • A fish's eyes are usually located toward the top of the head. This results in a tendency to eat prey that is above the fish. (You'll want to take advantage of this by presenting most lures and baits slightly above the fish's eye level.)
  • A fish hears by using bones in its head called otoliths. The hearing system then sends information to the brain.
  • Taste buds are not always located in a fish's mouth. For instance, a good-sized catfish has 175,000 taste buds spread all over its body, with another 20,000 inside the mouth.

Fall Fishing at Lake of the Ozarks

The temperatures will soon begin to cool as we head into Autumn and that means some great fishing here at Lake of the Ozarks! If you're an avid angler looking for their next trophy catch or just an occasional fisherman that enjoys spending some downtime relaxing on the water, Lake of the Ozarks should be your go-to destination for awesome Fall fishing. While you're out fishing, you'll see many gorgeous homes that line the shoreline. Why not make one of them YOUR new vacation home at Lake of the Ozarks? Team Lasson would be happy to secure your mortgage at Lake of the Ozarks.

What's there to Catch?

As mentioned above, Fall is an outstanding time to make a fishing trip to Lake of the Ozarks. As the temperatures cool, many fish become more active as the migration shifts food source locations. The most active fish being largemouth bass, channel/blue catfish, and white crappie.

Bass are best fished using topwater bait lures, plastic worms, spinnerbaits, or jigs around points, brush piles, and docks.

Catfish have shown tendencies to inhabit open water, so fishing out from the shoreline your bait a few feet from the bottom may prove to increase your catch rate. River channel breaks, coves, and deep flats are also prime fishing areas for catfish.

Crappie fishing is best focused around brush piles - notably brush piles located on or near points.

Fall Months Fishing

September:

September is when Lake of the Ozarks first begins the transition into Fall. The water in the back of creeks and coves are the first to cool, which starts the migration of food sources, such as gizzard shad, into these cooler areas. One notable fishing tip for September is to prioritize shallow docks, secondary points, or flats.

October:

The peak of the Autumn color has set by late October. During this month, the fish have become less concentrated in the backs of creeks, like in September, and will be found throughout the Lake. This is the great month for bass fishing as they begin schooling to hunt for shad and crawfish before moving towards the main lake and secondary points, following the forage fish.

November:

November temperatures can vary wildly, boasting mild and sunny 70 degree days as well as cold, wet, and windy 30 degree days. This is the peak month for bass fishing as they begin feeding extra heavily as the water temperatures drop to winter levels. Many fish can be found in the shallows during this time as the water temperatures near sub-freezing.

Why Lake of the Ozarks this Fall?

Lake of the Ozarks is an expansive man-made lake that is renowned for the beauty of its Fall foliage, amazing fishing, and outstanding lodging accommodations. It's big enough to have all the amenities you'd come to want in a lake community while being small enough to be completely private. It's the perfect place for a Fall getaway full of relaxation, adventure, and fun. If you're interested in making  Lake of the Ozarks your vacation home or even becoming a full-time resident, let Team Lasson secure your mortgage at Lake of the Ozarks.
