Happy Labor Day from Your Lakelender!

Labor Day Weekend is here! It's Friday and vacationers are already rolling in to the Lake of the Ozarks. Soon the area will be filled with sounds of live music on every corner of the Lake and fireworks displays will be lighting up the sky.  Labor Day is always a big weekend, but do you ever think about how it started? Your Lake of the Ozark mortgage lender is here to provide you with some background on this wonderful holiday!

History of Labor Day

Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the achievements of American workers.  The Central Labor Union planned and then held the first Labor Day celebration in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882.  The first bill for Labor Day to become a holiday was passed by the state of Oregon on February 21, 1887.  During that same year, 4 more states followed suit.  It wasn't until June 28, 1894 that Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

The first proposal of the holiday included a street parade to exhibit the strength, pride, fellowship and loyalty of the trade and labor organizations, as well as a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families.  Speeches by prominent leaders were later introduced and the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909 established Labor Sunday, the Sunday preceding Labor Day, as a day dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

Labor Day at Lake of the Ozarks

In celebration of this great holiday, be sure to check out the local fireworks:
  • Saturday - Bear Bottom Resort from 8:30-9:30 PM
  • Sunday - Lodge of Four Seasons from 6-10 PM
    • BBQ and Carnival prior to Fireworks
  • Saturday - Tan-Tar-A Resort from 8-9 PM

So this Labor Day, think about the history and pay tribute to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom and leadership, the American worker.  Your Lakelender Michael Lasson would like to wish everyone a safe and fun holiday weekend!
